Tips for a successful Family Photo Session

A successful family photo session depends on preparation, comfort, and a relaxed atmosphere. Here are some top tips to help ensure your session goes smoothly and results in beautiful, natural photos:

📅 Before the Session

  1. Choose the Right Time

    • late afternoon/evening or early morning offers the best natural lighting.

    • For small kids, schedule around naps and meals—happy kids = happy photos. I am very flexible for times.

  2. Coordinate Outfits -Try not to over think it!

    • Choose complementary colors and a cohesive palette.

    • Avoid busy patterns, logos, or neon colors.

    • Think timeless: simple outfits tend to age better in photos.

    • If you are a fancy family, go fancy…if you are a casual family, dress in a casual way

  3. Prep the Kids (and Adults)

    • Let kids know what to expect—I keep it light and fun. Kids will always be kids!

    • Avoid threats or bribes to kids; keep things positive and low-pressure.

  4. Pack Essentials

    • Snacks, water, wipes, combs/brushes, tissues, and backup outfits.

📷 During the Session

  • Go with the Flow

    • Don’t stress if kids don’t follow directions, keep it fun and remember that some of the best shots are candid.

    • Let me capture natural interactions, not just posed smiles.

  • Be Playful

    • Tickles, jokes, whispered secrets—these bring out genuine smiles and warmth.

  • Trust Your Photographer

    • They know how to direct light, poses, and timing. Follow their lead while staying relaxed. Sometimes things seem silly or unneccesary but there is always a master plan in the works.

💡 Style & Posing Tips

  • Layering looks great (jackets, cardigans, scarves).

  • Vary heights: Some standing, some sitting, kids in laps or on shoulders.

  • Interact naturally: Look at each other, not just the camera.

  • Don't force smiles—laugh, cuddle, chat, and the smiles will follow.

🌟 After the Session

  1. Review and Order Prints

    • Don’t just let your photos live online—print albums, frames, or photo books. I will give you an online album with download or printing options.

  2. Share Wisely

    • Ask your photographer about social sharing etiquette or tags, especially if they want to feature you.

Would you like advice tailored to a specific family size, age range, or location (e.g., beach, studio, park)? I’d be happy to help customize! I will work with you to achieve your vision for the photos!
